11/17/2009 - The Communications Workers of America, the largest union for Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ), said the company is laying off more than 1,000 employees in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, according to an AP report. A spokesman for Verizon, Alberto Canal, said that the layoffs are part of the company's already announced plan to cut 8,000 jobs before yearend. He confirmed that there have been layoffs this week but did not confirm the number given by the union.
