11/8/2009 - The U.S. House approved the $1 trillion health-care legislation in a vote of 220-215. The vote will require all Americans to get health-care coverage and will subject insurers to new restrictions and new competition from a government program. The plan will cost more than $1 trillion over ten years and is considered a historic follow-on to the creation of Medicare, which is a program for the elderly and disabled, according to a Bloomberg report. The bill would cover over 36 million uninsured Americans. President Obama said in a statement, "The House of Representatives passed a bill that would finally make real the promise of quality, affordable health care for the American people."
