10/23/2009 - Large airline carriers have followed in implementing a $10 round-trip fare hike initiated by AMR's (NYSE:AMR) American Airlines, according to a Reuters that cites Rick Seaney, CEO of Farecompare.com. Seaney said that there were roughly 15 such fare hikes matched by the industry in 2008 and 17 in 2007. "Airfare hikes that are matched this quickly by all network airlines rarely fail and are rolled back," he said. He is also watching to see if low-cost carriers Air Tran (NYSE:AAI) or Southwest (NYSE:LUV) match the hike as well.
