9/30/2009 - Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) announced several initiatives to increase its cellphone sales. Included on the list was the launch of a mobile device-centric Web site, collaborating with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) on a series of mobile applications, and lining up exclusive distribution rights for highly anticipated gadgets. The move is designed to enable the company's mobile division, Best Buy Mobile, to be more competitive with bigger carriers like Verzion (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T) as well as electronic retailers like Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN). Creating a mobile device-centric Web site allows consumers to purchase cellphone through the site. However, when the site is first launched consumers will only be able to research phones but will be able to purchase them starting early next year. The company plans to debut the site next month. The mobile applications that the company is collaborating on with Google will allow consumers searching for Best Buy products on their phones to see where the nearest Best Buy location is and information on whether to prudct is currently in stock at the store. The store will load the application onto phones for free.
