9/30/2009 - The Canadian Province of Ontario is suing several tobacco makers for a total of $50 billion to recoup health costs related to smoking since 1955, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Attorney General Chris Bentley said, "We believe that taxpayers should be compensated for the costs that they have paid." The defendants include Altria Group (NYSE:MO) and some of its Phillip Morris subsidiaries, British American Tobacco (AMEX:BTI), JTI-Macdonald and R.J. Reynolds (NYSE:RAI).
