EU Requests Companies Replace Speed Probes On A330/A340 Planes (GR) - 7/31/2009 1:48:04 PM

7/31/2009 - The European Union's airline-safety regulator plans to order all carriers flying Airbus SAS's A330 and A340 planes to install at least two speed probes made by Goodrich Corp. (NYSE:GR), replacing the units made by Thales SA. According to the European Aviation Safety Agency, the decision is based on analysis done on the devices' performance data. Airbus advised companies that fly specific wide-bodied planes to switch from the Thales devices to the Goodrich devices, following the analysis done after the Air France A330-200 crash. The planes each have three probes and the EU as well as the plane maker suggest that at least two of the sensors be changed, due to the fact that the probes, called Pitot tubes, are one element being investigated in the plane crash.
