Shares of Vical Incorporated (NASDAQ:VICL) rose more than 23% during Tuesday trading after the biopharmaceutical company announced successful animal tests of a potential swine flu vaccine. The company said that all of the mice and rabbits who received the vaccine were protected from the virus, and 75% reached or surpassed the protection threshold after one dose. Vical says it is ready to begin testing on humans once it gets the necessary funding. Vical is developing the vaccine under an agreement with the U.S. Navy, and did not receive a sample of H1N1 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention until April 30, a marker of the firm's speed in generating an effective response.
